Beating Katie at her own game
Three posts in one day, compared to your measly two!!
I saw 17 Again this weekend and it. was. amazing. I really didn't expect it to be any good at all but it was surprisingly hilarious. I think it's waaaaay better than Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is going to be but I have to stay true to Jennifer Garner (and Heather) and go see GGP anyway.
But I digress. I have secretly been making a few small plans for my novel. They shouldn't really count as plans, they're more just pre-plans. Like Cameron Diaz's character on What Happens in Vegas, I like to plan to plan. (And if you haven't figured it out by now, I'm trying to pack in as many romantic comedy references as possible. I'm sure I can come up with a few more.)
One plan is to keep my same characters from the first novel, but just to transport them to a different genre, time and location.
The second is to keep some of the same jokes - seven maraschino cherries, for example, and 'Jackie's Place always has the best music.' I might even start with the same opening line because, I have to admit, I really like the opening line of my novel.
But since seeing 17 Again, I have one more tiny plan. No, it's not to time travel, body-switching, or spirit guides magically make people 20 years younger and then returning them to the proper age once they have fixed their lives (as fun as that sounds). My plan is to somehow include, in 1920's fashion, my favorite quote from 17 Again. It's probably my favorite because of all the time I spent with the Transformers, but here it is. It's in the scene when Ned is telling Zac!Mike that his outfit sucks, and Zac!Mike tells Ned that he stole the look from K-Fed. (Comedy gold.)
Ned (sneering): Your shirt is bedazzled.
Zac!Mike (amazed that Ned doesn't see the glory of his shirt): But it's bedazzled with rhinestones!!
I don't think they had BeDazzlers (TM) back in the 1920's. But a few years back, I was inspired by Kentucky Fried Woman to make my art a reflection of the world I dream of, not necessarily the world I'm in. So I won't let a little thing like historical accuracy interfere with the novel of my dreams. Thanks KFW!

I'm confused. Does Matthew Perry turn unto Zac Efron and get to be a teenager circa now?
ReplyDeleteAnd Indigo, if your novel didn't have bedazzlers, excessive glitter, leather chaps and a shirtless Zac Efron, frankly, I would be disappointed.
Katie, yes, that is the case with Matthew Perry turning into Zac Efron, and then Zac gets to go to school with his own kids. Does that clear it up?
ReplyDeleteOMG! I am honored by my reference in this post. And I am now truly excited to see 17 Again. I wish I could go with you. xoxo
ReplyDeleteThanks, Krista! I've been thinking about you lots, and, more seriously, I always remember one thing you said (that you probably don't remember) about drag/burlesque and creating positive spaces in our performance. I thought about it because I've been reading a lot of novels from the 20's and they all have homophobic sections and racist sections. And in my novel, I'd rather not recreate that.
