Katy Perry takedown
I've ranted about the subject of this post on several occasions while in the car with CC, and thought I should get it down on paper/electronics so that a) CC doesn't have to listen to it again, and b) I don't forget it.
I (along with many people the world over) despise Katy Perry's song 'I kissed a girl.' Not only is it irritating to listen to, it's annoying and offensive in several ways. Here is a (very short) list.
a. She sings 'hope my boyfriend won't mind it' when she kisses a girl. Would she sing the same thing if she had kissed another guy? No, she would probably expect her boyfriend to care. So, not only is she being disrespectful to her relationship by crossing boundaries without checking first, she is disrespecting queer people by assuming that any sexual activity she might engage in with them somehow 'doesn't count.'
b. She is one of several current artists who try to seem cool and a little bit outrageous by aligning themselves with queerness, while not actually taking any risks or actually being queer. They are benefiting from the work of queer movements while not actually giving anything back. Two other examples:
I told you it would be a short list.
How does this tie into my novel, you ask? Well, I'm planning several scenes at Jackie's Place, the underground queer bar where there will be lots of drag performances (including the faux queen pageant). I think there will be a character named Katy Perry who will get booed off the stage at some point. She will have a very minor role, though she may somehow be aligned with the forces of evil supporting wicked novelist S.M.

- Lady Gaga said that her song 'Poker Face' is about her bisexuality. That is pretty surprising since the whole song is about her sleeping with a man. Wouldn't it make more sense to actually sing about having sex with a woman if she wanted to make a point about bisexuality?
- J.K. Rowling said (long after the fact) that Dumbledore was gay. But nowhere in the books was this even hinted at. There was plenty of heterosexuality - dances, romances, snogging, etc - but no homosexuality anywhere in the books. So apparently Dumbledore is the kind of gay person who never has any relationships, never has sex, and is completely and utterly closeted. Thanks, J.K. Rowling. I'm sure Dumbledore is an inspiration for us all.

I like your noveling idea. Since I hate both S.M and Katy Perry, it would be nice if they were teamed together for the purposes of evil.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your analysis. Katy Perry sucks.
