Seeking a great protagonist?
I'm getting very exciting for official NaNoWriMo. Today I had a great idea for my novel and since I was carrying my noveling notebook around with me, it has been immortalized. I love the weeks before the novel, when I am mulling over the idea in the back of my mind and new ideas come every now and then.
I also love the way I read books just before and just after novel writing month. I read differently; I consider how the novels are put together, how they are structured, the voice of the narrator, and I wonder what I could try with my own work. I've recently read some really great books that I'd highly recommend if you're seeking some noveling inspiration and a great protagonist.
Before I Fall is a young adult novel in which the protagonist continues to relive the day she dies.
What Was She Thinking? Notes on a Scandal is the one on which the amazing Judi Dench/Cait Blanchett movie was based and it is really, really good.
In both cases, the narrators are remarkably flawed people. Sam from Before I Fall has a few more good qualities than Barbara from Notes, but in both cases, part of the pleasure of the book is to get to know them in all their complexity. Notes was particularly amazing; I started off being amused by how bitchy and awful Barbara was, then got tired and bored of her, and then finally started to feel pity and, strangely enough, fear.
I'd love to hear any recommendations you have for books you find particularly inspiring in terms of plot, character, language, anything!
