Things are starting to work out, 42,698 words

But there is a lot of character development still to go. One of my characters has to have a complete change of heart in the next 8,000 words. I can't wait for this novel to be over, because it's causing me no end of problems trying to get everything sorted out.

As I told some of you, I've already been thinking about my novel next year. I think I'm going to move into the 1st person - and write a novel that is done entirely through letters and other pieces of found prose.

As is my habit, I include an excerpt that is primarily inspired by (and, basically written by) Martha Stewart.

Fernando and Olga were placidly printing sea shells onto the fluffy pillows provided by the hotel to decorate the settee. While the scallop shell's iconic shape turned the pillows into inspired accessories, Seth privately wondered at the folly of printing such designs onto hotel property.
“Sweetheart, do you think these linen covers are store-bought? Or perhaps they are hand-sewn,” Olga mused, her fair head bent studiously over a navy pillow. A scalloped sea shell, painted a pale blue, was held in her hand.

“Light of my heart, I am not sure. I do think that if these pillows were hand-made, it would be easier to print onto the fabric before cutting it, so the pattern will continue to the edges.”
“Good point. But darling, your prints are so uninspired. Please be playful in the design, with a mix of light and dark impressions, or go for a stylized row of narrow Vs, made by inking only part of a large shell.”

“I wouldn’t call my pillows uninspired! In fact, I’ve been inspired to use this technique on pillowcases, shirts, and sarongs. I might print with rubber forms or beach finds (such as these shells). In fact, I believe I will mix paints to find a shade that suits the fabric.” Fernando was indignant as he stolidly printed seashell shapes all over a blue corduroy cushion. The result was not as pretty as Olga’s creations, but neither seemed to mind.

“Seth!” Olga smiled prettily. “Please do come in. Are you interested in helping us spice up, so to speak, these dull and boring pillows? After the napkins you were using earlier, we felt it would be such a treat to continue the shell motif throughout our suite.”

Fernando and Olga are awesome. Love the shell motif.

  2. This is some good shit, Indigo. I can't believe that you are so close to the end that you are already thinking of the next book. This NaNoWriMo is freaking tiring, I think it will be months before I get enough perspective to think I'd want to do this again. Kudos!

Also, I've beeing giggling out loud - "please be playful in the design". Hilarious. This whole exchange between Olga and Fernando seems very passive aggressive.

  3. Indigo, I think that next year you should write a text book on incorporating Martha Stewart crafts into novels. Specifically, using Martha Stewart crafts as plot devices.
