Fenn walks out, 32,915 words

Today's writing took me very far afield from the EsNoverse. Fenn was so mad at the plot we had generated so far, they decided to leave it all behind. Which is a habit of theirs.

They are all on a tour bus driving aimlessly around while everyone prepares for the big plan to defeat Doug Ford, Jorn Acorn, and the wedding law. There is nothing really funny going on here! It gets dark!

Fenn told the driver to pull over, and grabbed the microphone so they could speak over the sound system.

“Hey, everyone, I’m getting off the bus. You don’t need me for this plan. It’s easy enough to find another idiot who’ll take poisonous drugs and stand in the back of a chorus line of inexperienced dancers on a faux pirate ship in the middle of Lake Ontario.

“I’m done. For months I haven’t made any decisions for myself. Glyn breaks up with me, I move away. Someone offers me a ridiculous job I don’t even want or like, I take it. They tell me to take poisonous hallucinatory drugs, I say okay. I don’t even ask for the details, or a bonus. Gal shows some interest, and Bailey doesn’t, so I date Gal, not Bailey. And I know, Gal that you said we weren’t dating, and I even say okay to that, even though you moved in to my house and have been sleeping in my bed every night. I say okay, we’re not dating. It’s not what I want but I say okay.

“Then Gordon tells me to go to a TIME MANAGEMENT seminar that I don’t need. But it’s Cody “Jorts” Simpson and THE Flo Rida, so I say okay. Then Cody’s in danger, it’s got nothing to do with me, but everyone just assumes I’ll join the resistance, so I say okay. I leave my home in the middle of the night, take more drugs, etc etc etc the list is longer than my fucking life, of things I’ve done just because people wanted me to.

“I’m done.

“And Jackie, you’re going to lay some guilt trip on me, because I’ve shown you how easy it is to manipulate me, but it’s not going to work this time. You know why? I don’t want to save the world. If the Earth flies into the sun in three days, I don’t really care. It’s a shitty place anyway, full of shitty compromises that you have to make every day just to stay alive. At least if the sun kills us, we’ll all be dead. The end. Probably a good idea, at this point.

“So you are all welcome to keep going, but I’m done. I wish you luck, I guess, but if I don’t see you again… goodbye. I don’t blame you. I’m the one that kept saying yes and yes and yes until it just about killed me.

“That’s all I’ve got for now. Goodbye.”

The bus driver opened the door, and Fenn walked out.

A bunch of stuff happened after that, including the introduction of my favorite real-life artist, Nick Cave, but I'll leave you guessing.

Here's a lovely picture of the lovely Nick Cave and some of his work.

  1. I can see why Fenn would not want to be a part of the plan - a lot has been asked of them! Everything sounds terrible - except the Cody Simpson/Flo Rida TIME MANAGEMENT seminar. Perhaps that seminar is what inspired Fenn? Don't waste your time on shitty things that you don't care about.

  2. I find myself deeply wanting to know what Fenn wants to say ‘yes’ to.

  3. What a great moment! These are the things that make great stories- now Fenn is seeing the pattern they have been in that has been limiting their growth/joy/whatever, and that means they are going to *do something different*. What will they do?? Also, you might not think it's a funny excerpt, but this is pretty funny: "It’s easy enough to find another idiot who’ll take poisonous drugs and stand in the back of a chorus line of inexperienced dancers on a faux pirate ship in the middle of Lake Ontario." IS IT EASY???

  4. I loved this excerpt, Indigo. It seems like a defining moment for Fenn-- realizing how much they have been bending to other people's needs and wants rather than thinking about what they actually want. It really does highlight how head-scratching much of what has happened has been. I am excited to see what Fenn does next.
